In Lisbon, piri-piri sauce is a popular hot sauce known for its complex, tangy and spicy flavor. While it is a staple in Portuguese cuisine, the sauce's origins trace back to Portugal's former African colonies, particularly Mozambique and Angola, where the African bird's eye chili (the key ingredient) was introduced by Portuguese explorers. The name "piri-piri" is the Swahili word for "pepper-pepper".

In Lisbon, piri-piri sauce is a versatile and essential condiment often served alongside grilled meats, especially the city's famous frango assado (piri-piri chicken).
In Lisbon, you will often encounter piri-piri sauce in two ways:
  • Restaurant-made: Most Portuguese churrasqueiras(grill houses) prepare their own versions of piri-piri sauce, which can be drizzled over the chicken at your table.
  • Bottled varieties: You can also buy branded piri-piri sauces at local markets and large retailers like Continente and Jumbo.
